Great news!! Sylas had his appointment today with the cardiologist for an echocardiogram and EKG. The doctor spent about 30 minutes looking closely at Sylas's heart and not saying much. I wanted to blurt out a bunch of questions, but I remained quiet and patient. Then he said, "Well, it appears tissue has grown over the opening of the VSD." I was completely surprised considering I was originally told that the VSD may need surgery or it may take a year to close on it's own. Wow!
Sylas also has a small ASD or PFO which are both openings in the wall between the two upper chambers (atrium) of the heart. This has decreased in size and the doctor is not concerned about it.
The pulmonary hypertension appears to have nearly normalized. Hurray!
Do we have a green light to travel to MN............YES!! We can wean Sylas off oxygen and follow up in 6 months. It was a great day!
Thank you for your prayers and encouraging comments, Sylas has come a long way in only 3 1/2 weeks.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS......

This is Joyce. What wonderful news!!! Truthfully, I have never heard of a VSD closing on it's own in 3 1/2 weeks, other heart defects yes, but this is truly amazing. I think it must be something magical about the warm, beautiful Hawaiian air:) Being able to wean him from the oxygen will be a nice change to. So happy Sylas is doing so good.
ReplyDeleteWonderful news Elena!! So happy for that answered prayer!!

Elena,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you found your way to my blog, since that way I could find my way to yours! What beautiful children you have!
What wonderful news that Sylas is feeding well and gaining weight--and how terrific was that cardio appointment!! Hannah had a battle with PPHN, but it sounds like Sylas is on top of all of it! The Boy has an agenda!!
I have another book for you to read, if you haven't already found it: Choosing Naia. Sure...in your spare time you can do your pleasure reading. All 7 seconds of it. I guess it doesn't really fall into the pleasure reading category, but then again, Down syndrome tends to become a passion, so reading about a family's story is actually a pleasure.
I look forward to watching Sylas, and the rest of you, grow!
Aloha Elena!
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful news!!! I am so happy to hear that Sylas doesn't have to endure heart surgery; another miraculous hurdle cleared-YIPPEE!
Tiana and I would love to take a drive to your side of the island and meet Sylas. Just let us know when it's a good time. XO
